Setting Your River Cruise Budget
A clear figure, and a few details, turn a guess into an accurate quote.
Request My River Cruise QuoteYour river cruise budget is the single most useful thing you can give a cruise advisor. Here is how to set it, and the other details that turn a rough figure into an accurate quote.
Decide What the Budget Covers
Before you name a number, decide what it has to pay for. Is it the cruise alone, or cruise plus flights? Does it include a night in Amsterdam or Budapest before sailing, travel insurance, tips and drinks? Two couples can quote the same figure and mean very different things. Tell us which, and say whether it is per person or for the whole party.
| Item | Inside or outside your budget? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise fare | Always inside | The core of every quote. |
| Port charges and taxes | Inside | Some quotes list them separately; ask for an all-in figure. |
| Flights | Your choice | Line-sold air can include transfers; your own flights may use miles. |
| Pre- and post-cruise hotels | Your choice | Often wise on long-haul trips. |
| Gratuities | Usually outside unless the line includes them | Included on some lines, extra on others. |
| Drinks beyond meals, spa, optional tours | Outside | Depends on how you travel. |
| Travel insurance | Your choice | Strongly advised for trips paid well in advance. |
Quote Request Checklist
- River or region — or “open to ideas”.
- Travel window — the wider it is, the more options.
- Trip length you can take, including flights.
- Who is traveling, with ages if children or teens are coming.
- Cabin — window, French balcony, full balcony or suite; and whether deck matters.
- Must-haves — drinks included, an elevator, active tours, a particular line.
- Past-guest numbers with any river line, which can unlock loyalty offers.
- The occasion, if there is one.

Flexible Dates and Cabin Choice: the Two Biggest Levers
If a quote comes back above your river cruise budget, two changes usually help most. The first is the date: a week earlier or later can move you into a different season or a sailing with a promotion. The second is the cabin: on most European ships the lowest deck has fixed windows set high in the wall, while the decks above have balconies. Many travelers find they spend little time in the cabin and are happy to trade the balcony for a longer trip or a better line. Our advisors will show you both versions in the same quote so you can see the difference.
Traveling alone? Solo pricing works differently — see cost per person and our sister site Singles River Cruises.
Not sure what number to name? Start with what you would be comfortable paying for the whole trip, flights included, and tell us that. We will work backward to the cruise fare and show you what fits.
